I have created a video montage of Syria photos taken by Tom, Jeremy, and myself on our 2008 motorcycle trip from London to Cape Town via Syria. The video follows our route from the northern city of Aleppo, through the Byzantine “ghost cities”, the ruins of Apamea, and the capital, Damascas. Unfortunately we could not do the same trip today because of the devastating civil war that has claimed over 60,000 lives. Civilians, and particularly children, have taken on the brunt of the suffering. Please consider making a donation to the International Committee of the Red Cross Syria Relief Fund as I have.
I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to ride my bike through Syria and experience the warmth of the people. At the same time, watching the news of the children starving and injured in mortar attacks feels that much more personal. I wonder what has happened to the children that playfully approached us. Are they even still alive?
